When I speak with people about what is going on in their lives, I’m often reminded that God is doing more than I know. In fact He is always at work and individuals are seeking Him more than we often realize. I was reminded of that Sunday.
I preached on fasting, asking everyone in our family of faith to fast this coming week. Whether it is a full or partial fast is their choice, as is how long they fast. We’re fasting for God to show us the way forward as we address some challenges that are hindering our effectiveness in evangelism as a church.
I’ve already received encouraging emails from members, with one couple describing a several day fast they’ve already started. The wife indicated that her “communication with God has been so incredibly close that it has felt as if He was sitting in a chair beside me.” Wow!
Sunday afternoon I called several guests who attended one of our worship services that morning. One couple had just finished discussing the sermon and decided they would fast this Tuesday. Wow! Guests looking for a church home are now fasting for our church’s future.
Another guest was a man who had suffered some traumatic events last week and just knew he needed to be in God’s house Sunday. His voice was tinged with emotion as we talked and he described how God had blessed him during the service. As I prayed with him, the Holy Spirit ministered to his heart.
There are other stories I could share from Sunday, but these illustrate that our God loves people and is moving in their lives even when we don’t know it. Knowing this encourages me to be more faithful in serving Him. He is always working and doing so for the good of those of who love Him and are called according to His purpose. Don’t ever doubt our God!
