The teenagers at the small church I where I was serving as Pastor were getting together on a Friday night and I was supposed to do some teaching on Christian dating standards. I was going to share with them some of the principles others had taught me when I was in high school. God had used those principles to protect me from bad decision and bad relationships, so I wanted to pass it on.
Monieca, whose family was part of our church, was in college and would be home that weekend. So I had asked her to help me with the youth event. To prepare for it, I stopped by her house to review the teaching material.
Afterward, we starting sharing on a personal level and I mentioned that I was interested in dating her. She responded the way I had hoped she would and the rest as they say is history. That was 31 years ago and I’m very glad things happened the way they did.
Some of you might think it was kind of sneaky of me to ask her to help with a dating seminar, and then ask her for a date. All I know is it worked and I don’t regret it!
From time to time I like to think about our history together as a couple. Remembering the past helps me focus even more being a better husband in the future. I guess that’s because those memories remind me how blessed I am. On this Valentine’s Day my greatest blessing is sharing love and life with that beautiful lady who 31 years ago responded in a way that made me smile. I’m still smiling and for that I am thankful.
Monieca…I love you!
Steve
