'Go and Make' or 'Sit and Soak'

Silence: Find a quiet place, remove potential distractions, clear your mind of other thoughts, and ask God to speak to you as you read and contemplate this passage:

Reflective Reading: Read Matthew 28:19-20 thoughtfully:

19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Meditation: Reflect on this command from Jesus, immediately before His ascension. What is God speaking to you through this exchange? What is the challenge that Jesus gives to His followers?

Oration: From your reading and prayer, verbalize or write in the space below your response to what God is speaking to you from this passage:

Contemplation: Over the next day, contemplate this passage and what God is saying to you. Think on these topics:

  • If you’re going away for an extended period of time, how much thought do you give to what you say just before you leave? Since Jesus knew he was departing for an extended period, how significant do you feel these words are?
  • It’s been said that Baptists have adopted a ‘Sit and Soak’ perspective (sitting in the sanctuary and soaking up the service) rather than a ‘Go and Make’ mindset, as Jesus commands. If these are the 2 ends of the spectrum, do you tend toward ‘Sitting’ or toward ‘Going’?
  • What actions might this passage be directing you to begin?
