When I was in college I met Alice and we got married. Our careers were going well and I got a promotion at the bank where I worked. A friend congratulated me and commented on the article in the newspaper announcing the promotion. He asked why it didn’t say anything about me being part of a church – because as he said, “Church is good for business.”
So Alice and I began attending his church and eventually joined. We both made some great connections at church and it was good for business.
Everybody thought I was a Christian – but I really wasn’t. I was just a member. As we heard the Bible preached and taught, we gradually began to realize there was more to this Christian faith than we were experiencing.
Our careers were successful, but we weren’t happy. One Sunday after church we were having lunch at home and I started an argument with Alice. I went outside in our back yard to cool off and Alice went to our bedroom to pack a suitcase. I took a Bible with me and it opened to the third chapter of John – which tells the story of a man named Nicodemus who wanted to follow Jesus but didn’t know how. I felt like Jesus was speaking directly to me.
I yelled toward heaven, “God if you are real; if you are there; please change me because I need to be changed.” Suddenly I was calm – and knew I had been forgiven. Jesus had entered my life. It was the greatest feeling of peace I’ve ever known.
I told Alice what had happened and we forgave each other. Our marriage was saved.
It has been my great joy since that day to tell people about Jesus and how he changed me.
