I grew up in a home where I was “taken” to church but my parents did not attend. At 5 years old I was asked if I knew what it took to be a Christian, and evidently I knew the right answer because they baptized me and told me I was a Christian. I was always conflicted by what I heard at church and the life that I lived outside of Church. I was into drugs and alcohol at a very early age. At 13 years old I would go out drinking and partying only to be in tears later when I was alone in my bed. I knew something was wrong. At the age of 15 some teens invited me to join them for Church and it was then I realized that I wasn’t a follower of Jesus, only a church attender with some knowledge about God.
One day I questioned the pastor about my situation. I told him of my confusion and he explained that we were all sinners according to Romans 3:23 and that God gave us a gift of forgiveness through his son Jesus Christ. Romans 5:8 reads “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” That day I truly became a Christ Follower. I finally understood that in order to be a Follower of Jesus you needed a relationship with Jesus.
My life after that day was a radical transformation. Those who knew me saw God take an “out of control” teen and turn him into an obedient loving person. My teachers and fellow students were in disbelief and would often ask me about it. I told anyone I could about how God had changed me and tell them how they could also be changed.
My life with the Lord has been incredible. God made it clear to me then when I was in College that I needed to trust Him and follow Him into vocational ministry. I look at what God has done in my life and I am amazed. God took a wild young trouble-maker with a speech problem and turned him into a 25 year veteran of ministering to Students.
