I grew up in a Christian home. When I was around 10, I started asking questions about what I was learning at church. One Sunday, we had a special preacher to talk to us about heaven and hell. I knew that I didn’t want to go to hell, so I made a decision to become a Christian by accepting Jesus as my Savior.
When I was a teenager, there was an older girl in our youth group that made an impression on me. She was so happy. She talked to me about being committed to Christ. I felt that I was a Christian but I wasn’t committed. I made a decision to change. I started by reading my Bible more, spending more time in prayer and becoming more active in the church and other Christian organizations.
So, what does this mean for me today as someone in her sixties? First of all, I know that I will spend eternity with God in heaven. This knowledge is such a comfort for me. I do not have to fear death. I also have contentment in my life. Yes, I have gone through many hardships through the years (cancer, a miscarriage, financial issues, death of love ones and many other things) but through it all God is always there. I love the verse in the Bible that says “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28). In other words, God is there working in the bad things you are dealing with. It is such a joy to see something good to come out of a bad situation.
Another blessing of being a Christian is having fellowship with other believers. I love and trust my Christian friends. I truly consider them my family. The Bible refers to us as brothers and sisters in Christ. It is great being a part of a big family.
I am so thankful that I am a Christian.
