I was born to an unwed mother in her sister's home because Mom was unable to afford medical care. I wasn't breathing because the cord was wrapped around my neck. There was debate about allowing me to die, but my great aunt intervened and saved my life. She and my uncle took us in, loving and caring for my mom, a brother, and me as their own children until I was 8. They taught me about Jesus and made sure I was in church each Sunday. Their faith and love for the Lord sparked my desire to know more about Him. When I was 8, Mom married. My mom and stepdad didn't attend church often but they encouraged us to walk to church each Sunday.
When I was 11, I had felt the Lord speaking to me for quite some time and asked Jesus into my heart at Vacation Bible School. I know Jesus saved me that day but I sure had a lot to learn about His love.
After my salvation experience I tried hard to live a good life and be pleasing to God, but I often felt defeated. As a teen, I read my Bible consistently but really didn't have much guidance. It was during the college years that many great friends and some wonderful mentors began to teach me about the depth of God's love and sacrifice. These special people inspired me to desire a deeper relationship with Jesus. The most influential person in my spiritual growth was my wife. We married in college and started a wonderful journey of discovering how to serve God together in many ways. We have been blessed to serve people through our church, in camp ministries and love watching our son serve the Lord as a Pastor.
