In Truett Cathy’s autobiography he mentions that he often carries a big Chick-fil-A shopping bag with him when he travels. People see the bag and often initiate conversations with him (even if they don’t know who he is) in airports and other public places. They say things like, “Oh, we love to eat at Chick-fil-A.” He’ll often respond by asking what they like best at Chick-fil-A. As the conversation continues, an unsolicited testimonial has been heard by other people standing nearby. Cathy calls this one-on-one brand building and states that it can be very effective. In fact he encourages anyone associated with Chick-fil-A to carry one of their big shopping bags.
Have you ever noticed a name or slogan on a bag someone was carrying or a shirt they were wearing? I have and I imagine you have as well. That is free advertising for something and often creates a conversation.
That is why I encourage people to wear shirts with the First Baptist Church name on it. You become a walking billboard that God can use. It also works to wear shirts with Christian slogans on them. I notice people reading one T-shirt in particular I wear. The letters FBI are printed in a large bold font on the front. Then in smaller writing it reads Firm Believer In Christ.
This is a simple but very effective way to initiate spiritual conversations with lost and unchurched people. It also is a good way to advertise our church to the community.
