Autopilot Parenting

In “Confident Parenting”, Jim Burns shines a light on a struggle many of us face as parents: we’re diligent about meeting our children’s physical needs—ensuring they’re fed, clothed, and safe—but we often let other critical areas such as their spiritual health, slip through the cracks. It’s not intentional neglect; it’s more like a slow drift. Burns observes that we frequently settle for mediocrity when it comes to leading our kids, allowing the chaos and pace of life to take the wheel. Between school schedules, extracurriculars, and endless to-do lists, families can fall into a false sense of security, believing that busyness equals progress. In reality, this hands-off Autopilot approach leaves our children’s path to independence and maturity guided more by circumstance and chance than by purposeful direction.

This subtle shift can have lasting consequences, unfortunately. Burns warns that without intentional leadership, we tend to compromise the natural, good parenting values we hold dear—not through dramatic failures, but through small, seemingly harmless concessions. A missed opportunity to teach a life lesson here, a decision to let something slide there, and over time, these moments add up. We start to lose sight of the bigger mission- raising kids who are not just surviving but thriving, grounded in the biblical principles we want them to carry into adulthood. It’s not that we don’t care—it’s that we get distracted and busy, and the stakes are too high to let that happen.

The good news? We can break this cycle. Parenting doesn’t have to be a roll of the dice or a reaction to whatever life throws our way. We can lead with confidence, clarity, and purpose—but it starts with equipping ourselves to do so. That’s where our Confident Parenting Banquet comes in.
