Last week our church hosted a “Preparing for Retirement” seminar. It was for church employees who have retirement funds invested with GuideStone Financial Resources, an agency of the Southern Baptist Convention. Several of our staff attended and I had registered. Unfortunately my illness and heart cath prevented me from participating. I’m only 54, but I had wanted to see what I could learn and do some more planning for retirement.

I’ve got some catching up to do because when I was young I didn’t know as much as I know today. While my situation is not desperate, it would be better if I had known some of this stuff when I was 20. I’ve learned that a lot of young adults don’t know much about investing for retirement and they don’t do anything to learn about it. They just ignore it, thinking it all work itself out. Problem is…life doesn’t work that way.

We know this is true in the spiritual world. If you don’t make preparation for death by committing your life to Jesus Christ, you won’t be ready when you die. In the same way, if you don’t make preparation for retirement, you won’t be ready when the time comes to stop working.

If you’re a young adult reading this blog, don’t let your pride or fear or ignorance cause you to do nothing. Make a commitment to learn! Take advantage of the classes and seminars we offer at FBC. Start preparing now for retirement…it is never too early to start.
