I heard the door open about 3:30 am this morning. Evan had just made it home.
Our son-in-law, who serves in the Air Force, has been deployed since May and our daughter and grandson have been living with us while he was away. He flew from Germany to Baltimore yesterday and then drove all night to Rock Hill. A lot of us have been praying for his safety.
I spent some time thinking about how excited my “little girl” is to see her husband. Knowing she was happy made me happy.
My emotions are tempered by the knowledge that in two weeks they will leave for Italy where he is stationed…and take our grandson with them. While it will be sad for all of us, it will also be life as it should be. They are young and charting their own course…together. New adventures await them and they will be happy.
As a pastor I often see families who are not happy. I often see couples who are not excited to see each other. It breaks my heart. Their hearts are usually already broken.
The reality is that life is about relationships. God first and family second. Within the family, marriage is first. A lot of couples seem to forget this. They put other things or people first…kids, work, hobbies, friends, personal agendas, etc. Those are the couples who experience broken hearts along the way.
I’m glad Evan made it home safely. I’m also really glad my “little girl” is happy.
