Hogg’s Pearls of Wisdom for April, 2018
Passing on to you the pearls of wisdom gleaned from what I read, watch and listen to each month. If a particular pearl appeals to you, click the link and enjoy. Like God’s Word says: “Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise” (Proverbs 19:20 NIV). I pray these pearls help each of us to be counted among the wise and live a more beautiful life.
“3 Common Ways Leaders Disqualify Themselves” Eric Geiger. He does more than list the three most common failures by leaders. He offers a simple and practical suggestion for each of them. Link: https://ericgeiger.com/2018/02/3-common-ways-leaders-disqualify-themselves/
“What Creates Satisfied and Successful Kids” Tim Elmore. The Harvard Grant Study is the longest longitudinal study in history. It has tracked the lives of a group of college students for decades after they became adults, revealing several factors that produce happy, well-adjusted adults. Many of these factors do not surprise us. However one common factor does come as a surprise to many people. It’s the practice of having children regularly perform chores. Tim explains why in this article. Link: https://growingleaders.com/blog/research-creates-satisfied-successful-kids/
The Sins of White Supremacy. It’s been 50 years since Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated and this article by Russell Moore, President of our Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, is a must read for each and every Southern Baptist. Dr. Moore helps us think about what it means to be a Biblical Christian in the context of culture and race. Link: https://memne.ws/2GlYBBK
“The 5 Types of People You Need to Get Out of Your Life” Ronald Riggio. Friendship is an important part of life. We need friends. We also need to be a friend to others. Sometimes we let each other down, but we work through those moments and continue being friends. What about friends who are not helpful or supportive? In fact, they make things worse. This article lists five types of friend who add stress to our lives and suggests we really don’t need them. As followers of Christ it can be difficult to just cut people out of our lives because we are called to love them. Yet I would suggest it is appropriate to establish some boundaries that protect us from the types of friends the author describes. “Praying When You Get the Wind Knocked Out” Jonathan Graf. Eventually each of us experience times in life when life is really hard. Praying in those moments can be a challenge. Our walk with the Lord can be hindered. In this brief article the author describes what he does to fill his lungs with spiritual air. I think he’s on to something. “FIRST PERSON: Hawking, the cosmos & its Creator” Erich Bridges. The author’s personal reflection on Stephen Hawking, the famous physicist and atheist who died last week, demonstrates both admiration and sadness. By quoting Hawking he summarizes the attitude of modern science and the faith required to believe, as Hawking did, that the universe had no beginning.
