Peter Drucker famously stated that “management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things.”
One of the lessons I’m learning as the years pass is that leadership becomes increasingly important as our church grows. It also becomes more challenging.
More people, more activities, more systems, more complexity, more everything. This “more” makes it easy for leaders to get sucked into management. When that happens we focus on doing well what we’re already doing, with not enough thought and evaluation given to if we’re doing those things that actually move us forward in our mission. Peter Drucker was right…there is a difference between leadership and management.
Our recent unhindered process at FBC was in part to help us think from a leadership perspective. Thus we came to the conclusion that we needed to stop doing some things we were doing and begin doing some things we were not doing. The answer to our challenges was not to just do better the things we were already doing.
One thing I want to do is share insights about leadership and our ministry with those of you who read this blog. Thus for the next few months, I’m going to devote my Friday blog to leadership issues and it is my hope that you will both enjoy and benefit from them. Not all of the thoughts will be mine. Many will be insights I garner from other leaders and researchers.
I’ve not arrived in my journey as a leader and how long my journey will last is something I don’t know. I hope it lasts for many more years. What I do know is that however long it does last, my desire is to continue learning and growing. As I share my journey with you, I also pray that you will be encouraged in your journey.
