While waiting at a stop light last evening on my drive home, I noticed a sticker displayed high on one of the back doors of a tractor-trailer in front of me. The sticker read, “IT IS NOT A CHOICE – IT IS A CHILD.” Since it was easily visible to anyone behind him, I assumed the driver wanted the message to be known. He believes an unborn child is just that…an unborn child. He also believers abortion cannot be defined as simply a choice. I happen to think the driver is right. Life does not begin when a child takes his or her first breath of air outside the mother’s womb. I also believe a child is a precious gift of God, whether outside or inside the mother’s womb.
In the brief time I followed and then passed this truck, I had several thoughts and reactions. I prayed for him, thinking that it’s likely he is a follower of Christ. I liked the positive nature of the message. Too often our messages are more negative and, therefore, less effective. I also wondered why he was bold enough to display such a message while many of us who follow Christ are too ashamed to be identified in public as one who follows and loves Jesus. It seems some of us are eager to be known for what we are against, but too timid to ever have a one on one conversation with someone about their need for a relationship with Jesus.
Now that I think about it…displaying a bumper sticker is much easier than having a conversation. But conversations are more meaningful and can be life changing.
Who are you going to talk with this week about Jesus? Who are you going to invite to church?
