We had gone to Snake Valley Lake for the evening to fish (how do you like that name) and we always did pretty well there. For some reason I don’t remember, I got mad and did what little kids often do – I pouted. I told dad I didn’t want to fish anyway and just sat in the car listening to the radio. Meanwhile everyone else was catching fish and I could see in light of the camp fire how much fun they were having. But I wasn’t about to admit that I was wrong. So I continued sitting in the car, missing all the fun. After about two hours I got out and picked up a rod and reel. But it was too late…it was time to leave.
I still remember how disappointed I felt that I had not gotten to fish. I also remember how I felt sitting in that car…wanting to fish but too proud to say “I’m sorry.” I didn’t have any fun that night and it was no one’s fault but my own. While my dad caught fish, I imagine I embarrassed him and stole some of his fun as well.
Do you ever miss out on opportunities because you have a bad attitude or make a bad choice? Afterward you wished you had done differently, but it’s too late. You know you should apologize, but you’re too proud. You robbed yourself, but in the process negatively impacted others as well.
Sunday morning’s sermon looked at what Judas missed because of his decision to betray Jesus. This week our “Unhindered Devotions” will look at Bible verses describing how we often miss out on things because of our choices or attitude. Check them out Monday through Friday on our church web site.
You might be surprised at the different things we can miss and the different reasons we miss them.
