Silence:
Find a quiet place, remove potential distractions, clear your mind of other thoughts, and ask God to speak to you as you read and contemplate this passage:

Reflective Reading:
Read Deuteronomy 11:18-21 thoughtfully:

18 Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 19 Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, 21 so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land the LORD swore to give your ancestors, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.

Meditation:
Reflect on this challenge from Moses to the God’s people. What is God speaking to you through this exchange? What is the challenge from Moses?

Oration:
From your reading and prayer, verbalize or write in the space below your response to what God is speaking to you from this passage:

Contemplation:
Over the next day, contemplate this passage and what God is saying to you. Think on these topics:

  • The book of Deuteronomy (literally the second reading of the law) is Moses exhortation to God’s People on the plains of Moab – after a generation has died in the wilderness and before the crossing of Jordan into the Promised Land. His call to the Israelites was that they both learn God’s Word and teach it to their children.
  • How faithful are you at learning scripture?
  • How faithful are you at teaching scripture to your children? …to other’s children?
  • Pray for the leaders and teachers in our church who teach our children scripture.
  • What actions might this passage be directing you to begin?
