“The pollen is really bad. Everything is yellow. But the redbuds and dogwoods are really pretty.” That was how my brother described the scene in Kentucky this morning as he drove to work. He talked about how beautiful the mountains are when everything turns green, but how dreary they can be in the winter.
That was our scene in Rock Hill two or three weeks ago. Being south of Kentucky means we’re on a slightly different timeline than my home state.
That’s a lot like life. Most of us have similar experiences, but they don’t happen at the same time or in the same order. Sooner or later we all experience great joy, deep sorrow and the monotony of daily routines. We love, we celebrate, we get sick, we lose loved ones, and the list goes on and on. We see the beautiful blooms of redbuds and dogwoods while also struggling with pollen and its messy dust.
It would be nice if life was all redbuds and dogwoods. But It’s not…at least not this side of heaven. Yet those redbuds and dogwoods smiling through that messy yellow dust remind us that life is beautiful…and heaven will be perfectly beautiful.
So when life throws dust in your face, look for the dogwoods. They are always there…we just need to lift our eyes in their direction.
