We hosted the annual “Police Honor and Memorial Service” at lunch today, with nearly 200 law enforcement personnel from several agencies and departments in attendance. The service is a time to remember those officers killed in the line of duty and to show support to their families. At one point in the service, a bell tolls after the name of each officer killed in the line of duty is called. An honor guard then places a wreath at the altar, followed by a 21 gun salute and the playing of taps. Flowers are then presented to the slain officers’ families by the chiefs of each department. Today I watched as moms, wives, and children wiped away tears. As evidenced by the attendance of family members whose loved ones died in 1968 and 1975, their loss is something they always feel. It was moving and a strong reminder of the danger faced by these public servants.

Next time you see a law enforcement officer, whisper a prayer for their safety and thank God for their willingness to do the job. When you get a chance to say “thank you” to one of them, take it. They don’t get rich being a police officer and they regularly face unknown dangers. A simple thank you and prayer is something they deserve.
