Saturday has always been my favorite day of the week. More specifically, Saturday morning has always been my favorite part of my favorite day.
I know…as a preacher I’m supposed to say Sunday. Don’t get me wrong. I love to worship with God’s people on Sunday. Monieca and I go to church somewhere even when we’re on vacation, not because we feel we have to but because we want to. Yet Saturday is my favorite day.
When I was a kid it was because I loved cartoons. Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote, Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Tom and Jerry, and the list could go on and on. Later it was Superman, Batman, and The Lone Ranger. Before fully entering adolescence, it was The Archies, Fat Albert, and Scooby-Doo. Most Saturday mornings you could find me in front of the TV watching cartoons on one of the three channels we got.
In recent years you’re likely to find me at the kitchen counter with a cup of coffee reading my Bible and meditating on what God speaks to my heart. Afterward I’ll drink more coffee while surfing the web catching up on the news and sports. I’m usually the only one up and it’s quiet. It’s what some would call “me time.” Really it’s just the one time most weeks when I get to relax and be alone.
It dawned on me one day that God is with me each and every day of the week…just as much as He is with me on Sunday. He is with me when I’m watching cartoons or drinking coffee just as much as He is when I’m preaching. I’m never out His presence. I need Sunday. I need daily moments of prayer and reflection. I love God’s word. But Saturday morning is still my favorite part of my favorite day. God sometimes uses it to “restore my soul” as He leads me to “green pastures” and “still waters.”
What about you? What’s your favorite time each week and why?
