I enjoyed a special moment with my 22 month old grandson, Liam, this morning and I’m so glad I did. What amazes me is how simple this special moment was.
Monieca and I are caring for him this week, which means I’m taking him to day care each morning. The past two mornings, we visited a local restaurant where Liam devoured pancakes. This morning, he got waffles at home. My special moment occurred while he was eating.
As he fed himself, I gave him a breathing treatment. For several minutes he looked at me and smiled, placing his free hand on mine while I held the nozzle releasing the medicated mist. He even smiled with his eyes. For that brief span of time, I felt very blessed and the look on his face is now etched in my heart.
We spend too much of our life focused on destinations and fail to enjoy the journey. This morning I slowed down for a few minutes and was blessed by a beautiful smile. It only lasted five minutes, but many times in my life I’ve missed a beautiful five minutes because I was in a hurry to reach some destination.
The longer we live, the more we realize that the journey is our life. Having the right destination as a goal is a good thing because it means we are likely to have a lot of beautiful scenery along the way. That scenery makes life special, but only if we take time to recognize and enjoy it.
I pray that you are learning to recognize those special moments as they occur and that you take the time to enjoy them. They don’t always require a lot of time, but they do require that we notice them.
