I had thrown a bag of garbage into the bin the convenience center near our home and was walking back to my car when I heard his voice. “It’s good to see another UK fan” he yelled through the window of his truck. I didn’t recognize him but he immediately introduced himself and extended his hand. I shook it and asked how he knew I was a UK fan. “Your tag” he replied. I’d forgotten that the license plate on my car reads “KY CATS”.
I introduced myself and we talked for a few minutes. His family had moved here from Kentucky a couple of years ago and even visited our church once. I asked if they were attending anywhere and he indicated they were not…“out of the habit.” I explained our Sunday morning schedule and invited him to bring his family to FBC this Sunday.
I’m learning that opportunities to talk to people develop at unexpected moments and it’s really not that difficult to turn them toward a spiritual conversation or an invitation to church. I’m also learning that I have to be intentional…I have to look for those opportunities and then seize them when they occur.
Earlier this week I paid for lunch at the register of a local restaurant where I often eat and know many of the staff. I was doing my normal talking with the woman at the register and turned to leave when she said something…I don’t remember what she said. What I do remember is immediately thinking “this is an opportunity.” So I turned around and asked her a question, then listened as she shared with me very personal details of her life. I don’t know for certain if she is a believer. Probably not based on some of what we she told me. I speak with her often and look forward to continuing our conversation.
It may seem strange to some readers, but I was excited that thought had entered my mind. I’m working hard at training my mind to listen and recognize opportunities to engage people in spiritual conversations. In the process I’m learning that it’s actually fun.
