Sunday I challenged everyone at FBC to spend the month of May reading the Old Testament book of Proverbs and to underline or highlight each verse that deals with relationships and how we handle our emotions. I did this because as I was preparing the sermon on developing the fundamental skills needed to have a winning marriage, I realized just how many verses Proverbs talk about those issues.
The skills I mentioned Sunday were learning how to talk to each other the right way, how to listen so that you really hear and understand each other, how to deal with conflict positively and effectively, and how to forgive each other along the way so that the little things don’t pile until they become a really big thing. During the sermon we read a long list of applicable verses from Proverbs, but there are so many more verses in the book we didn’t get to because we didn’t have time.
Below are some of the verses I’ve identified, some of which we read Sunday and some we didn’t. This list might be a starting point for your reading. Even better would be for you to take the challenge and read the whole book at least one in May. Go slow and reflect on those verses that jump out at you. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you things you hadn’t seen before. Remember you’re looking for verses that speak about relationships, emotions, actions and attitudes that impact relationships, and anything else you think applies to having a great marriage and being the kind of person that makes any group you are part of better.
Let me know how God uses Proverbs in your life. I look forward to hearing from you.
See you Sunday – Mother’s Day.
