Monieca’s Sunday School class had their Christmas party last night and among the festivities was an “ugly sweater contest.”  Not everyone participated but a few brave souls went for it big time.  They stood before us like models on a runway as we applauded for the one we considered the ugliest.  Winners were declared and prizes awarded, but mostly there was laughter.

Laughter was a common theme throughout the evening.  During conversation at dinner, we laughed.  Certain “white elephant gifts” produced more laughter than others.  About the only time there wasn’t any laughter was while the Christmas story was read and we sang Christmas Carols.

Like Ecclesiastes 3:4 says, there is “A time to weep and a time to laugh; A time to mourn and a time to dance.”

Before a person commits his or her life to Jesus, weeping and mourning are appropriate.  Sin and the prospect of hell leave everyone hopeless and helpless.  After a person commits his or her life to Jesus, laughing and dancing are normal.  Forgiveness and salvation leave everyone practically giddy.

God’s people should be happy and have fun.  We should enjoy being together.  And get this – we don’t need booze and vulgarity to laugh and celebrate.  We have Jesus!

Merry Christmas Everyone,

Pastor Steve Hogg

PS  The winners were Mandy Ingram and Jim Davis

Ever since I became a member of this class I have learned to care about a large number of people who have needs, wants, dreams and problems. Yet these people depend on God and each other to get through the bad times and celebrate the good times. They are an example and encouragement to me and I thank God for them.

I love God brought this class into my life. I’ve missed the get togethers but love this class . True’ honest and loving people. They say they care and prove it over and over. Just got out of hospital yesterday and just having the hardest day and there at my door were two of God’s angels to lift my sprit. God bless each and everyone.
