When they first met he was a devout Christian and she followed a different religion. In fact, she knew very little about Jesus Christ. Yet over the next three years they talked often, with my uncle Don always telling her something about Jesus and how to have a relationship with Him. Eventually she committed her life to Jesus.
Uncle Don’s Pastor told that story yesterday during his funeral in Kentucky. I had not heard the story before, but it didn’t surprise me. He was always witnessing. When I was an unchurched kid he was the one who told me about Jesus.
His daughter stopped by the house to check on him Monday afternoon and found him sitting on the couch – “absent from the body but present with the Lord.” I can only imagine how many people were waiting to welcome him to his heavenly home.
During his memorial service I gave the eulogy, sharing the story of his impact on my life. He and my aunt Bonnie were the only Christians I knew as a kid. I’m sure other people I encountered were Christians, but I didn’t know it. None of them ever said anything. Uncle Don was different. He was a Christian and he wanted everyone he met to know Jesus.
Only Jesus knows how many people were saved because of his witness. I know I’m one of them!
