Last Sunday nearly 300 men came to the altar and picked up a “Six In 6” coin (see photo below) to carry in their pocket as a reminder to pray each time they reached into their pocket and felt it. This week I’ve had conversations with several men about the coin and what it’s been like. A common theme has been that we’re praying for more than just the $6 million in six years. We’re praying for other needs in our church, family, work, and spiritual lives. It seems that when we start praying about the campaign and giving, the Holy Spirit is prompting us to pray about other things as well.
I have to be honest – I didn’t anticipate that happening. But I’m really glad it is.
I should have been wise enough to know that when any of us pray about something, God always guides us to pray about more things. Praying leads to more praying and that is definitely a good thing.
We know that the idea of $6 million in six years doesn’t make a lot of sense on paper – when we just look at the numbers and our history. We also know it needs to happen and it’s the right thing. Most importantly we know God can do it – but we also have to do our part. Our part is seeking God in prayer and responding to what He tells us to do.
There are two opportunities designed to help each of us pray and hear God. First, this Sunday we’ll gather at the church at 5:00 PM for a prayer event we’re calling “Giving Ourselves to God.” You will encounter God as you move among several prayer stations, each with Bible verses and instructions to help you pray. This will be a time of personal and private seeking God. You will not be praying out loud in groups. Testimonies from our January 4 prayer event, which also utilized prayer stations, were unanimously positive. So join us Sunday evening and have an encounter with the living God.
Second, next week will be a week of fasting and prayer at FBC. A fasting guide will be inserted in this Sunday’s bulletin, so be sure to get a copy. It will explain what fasting is, how to fast, and offer practical suggestions. There are many ways to fast, so don’t limit yourself to preconceived ideas that might discourage you from fasting. Read the guide and allow the Holy Spirit to direct you in the type of fast He wants you do one day next week. Ultimately fasting is about giving up something for a definite period of time in order to seek God about something. I’m asking everyone at FBC to fast one day next week and seek God regarding our commitment to the “Six In 6” campaign. (Click here for a link to the fasting guide)
Thank you for praying and for seeking the Lord’s guidance.
