She picked up the blue napkin from the table and wiped away a tear, then gave it to another family member who was also crying. That was the scene today at lunch that “got me.”
More than 200 Law Enforcement Officers joined public officials and community leaders at FBC for the 21st annual Police Memorial Luncheon during which we remember the nine men who’ve given the ultimate sacrifice over the years in York County. A memorial wreath is placed by an honor guard, a bell tolls after each name is read, taps is played following a 21 gun salute, and flowers are presented by the various police departments to the families who never stop grieving. Such a scene would touch anyone and it definitely touched me.
There are prayers, scripture reading, a speaker, special music, and a meal – but the highlight each year is the same. It is the scene I described above.
Judge David Guyton was this year’s speaker and he used a line to which I say a hearty amen – “Blue Lives Matter.” It’s an honor for our church to host this annual event. While many hurl insults at those who put their lives on the line every day serving our community, I’m proud to be among those who say “thank you” to these men and women. I’m also proud to pastor a church that loves this community and supports our men and women “in blue.”
I hope this last statement doesn’t seem out of place – but I also want to say “thank you” to the generous givers in our congregation. Your faithful giving makes it possible for us to host events like today’s luncheon.
